| DECA SWEEPS AWARDS AT STATE CONFERENCE |
EAST HIGH STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN DECA CONFERECE/COMPETITION March 9
Aurora — The following 18 East Aurora Marketing Education/DECA students attended the Career Development Conference in
Decatur, March 4 th through 6 th: Josefinia Aguilar, Michelle Chavez, Yesenia Flores, Crystal Gandarilla, Jamilia House,
Gaylan Lake, Desiree Lopez, Tijon Martin, Jasmine McGaughy, Evette Meeks, Cynthia Monarrez, Socorro Nicasio , Michael
Pavon, Karen Reyes, Liz Tellez, Tou Thao, Corina Valenzuela and Tyritha Williams.
There were 60 schools in attendance and students competed in the areas of economics, marketing, retailing, management
and entrepreneurship. The top three students in each contest qualified to attend the International DECA Career
Development Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, April 30 through May 5th.
Students receiving Competency Certificates in their respective contests were: Desiree Lopez, Retail Merchandising;
Cynthia Monarrez, Business Services; Mike Pavon, Quick Serve Restaurant; Karen Reyes, Business Services; Tou Thao,
Quick Service Restaurant; Tyritha Williams and Tijon Martin, Apparel & Accessories.
Tijon Martin and Desiree Lopez achieved 3 rd place medals in respective contests within their competition.
Karen Reyes and Tijon Martin qualified as top 10 finalists in their contests.
In a separate Sales Demonstration contest, Desiree Lopez and Karen Reyes qualified for the finals by placing in the top
10 of their contests. In the finals, Karen Reyes finished first in the Miscellaneous Division and took home a trophy and
plaque.
In the written projects division, all five projects submitted qualified in the top 10 of their divisions. Gaylon Lake,
Desiree Lopez and Tyritha Williams received medals for their Learn and Earn project. Karen Reyes also received a Top 10
medal for her project in Civic Consciousness. Qualifiying for national competition in their written events were:
Yesenia Flores, Josifina Aguilar and Socorro Nicasco with their Public Relations Project, finishing second;
Tou Thao, Marketing Research Hospitality and Recreation, 3 rd place; Liz Tellez and Cori Valenzuela, Civic
Consciousness, 1st place.
Karen Reyes also qualified in Business Services Management to compete in Nashville in May.
East Aurora will send a total of seven DECA students to compete in Nashville , Tennessee April 30-May 5th.
All students did a great job in representing themselves and East Aurora at the DECA competition in Decatur.
